This is a tutorial for creating a program using Scratch where two sprites (characters) talk. Students will use a combination of the say and wait blocks. The main programming concepts taught are to sequence an algorithm correctly and to debug a program.

Optional challenge activities are:

  • Change the direction a sprite is facing
  • Import downloaded images as sprites
  • Include multiple backgrounds in the sequence
  • Add sound effects to the sequence
  • Add movement to sprites

Scratch is developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. See
